Industry Specific Quality Standards

Various industries have adopted and modified the requirements in order to meet the needs of their specific sector of activity. Here are just a few:

Aerospace Industry

  • AS 9100 This standard includes the ISO 9001:2000 quality system requirements and specifies additional requirements for the quality system of the aerospace industry

Automotive Industries

  • QS-9000 This standard is a supplement to ISO 9000:1994 with additional requirements for each ISO 9001 element as per the requirements developed by DaimlerChrysler, Ford, and GM. In Februray, 2006 ISO/TS 16949 is planned to replace QS 9000. 
  • ISO/TS 16949:2002 This Technical Specification, in conjunction with ISO 9001:2000, defines the quality management system requirements for the design and development, production and, when relevant, installation and service of automotive-related products.

Telecom Industry

  • TL 9000 Using ISO 9000 as a foundation, TL 9000 defines the telecommunications quality system requirements for the design, development, production, delivery, installation and maintenance of products and services.

Financial Services

  • FS 9000 Top financial services firms and public accounting firms are leading an effort to establish an FS 9000 Standard and certification program for the financial services industry worldwide. FS 9000 will be based on the international standard ISO 9000.


  • ISO/IEC 17025:1999 General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. This standard contains all the requirements that testing and calibration laboratories must meet to demonstrate that they operate quality management systems (QMS), are technically competent and can generate technically valid results

Medical Services

  • ISO 13485:2003 specifies requirements for a quality management system where an organization needs to demonstrate its ability to provide medical devices and related services that consistently meet customer requirements and regulatory requirements applicable to medical devices and related services.
